There are plenty of myths surrounding sales and marketing. These myths, however, are not about monsters hiding in your file room, or your company’s resident ghost that keeps on hiding your stapler when you need it the most. No, these myths are more like misconceptions when it comes to lead generation and marketing. Some of these “myths”, for example, tell us why marketers don’t do this – or why they don’t do that. Fortunately though, some myths aren’t true.
Today, we are going to be exploring the field of online lead generation and will do our best to debunk some of the beliefs on generating leads online. We found this good post over at autopilotonlinesuccess.com which talks about 3 myths about online lead generation titled 3 Popular Myths About Generating Online Leads. You can read the full post here.
In the post we mentioned above, the author talks about 3 myths in online lead generation. Today, we are going to do our own debunking surrounding these so-called myths. Let’s proceed, shall we?
“Online Lead Generation Myth #1: There really aren’t any free online lead generation strategies.”
Actually, there are free online lead generation strategies. It’s just that some of them do not give a positive ROI when you take into account the amount of time you put into working on them. For example, blogging and article directory submissions. Let us say that in a month you can generate around 30 leads via telemarketing. Then you try to make use of a free method such as using blogs and article directories. Let’s put the number of leads you generated through them at around 10.
Now, we are only talking about leads here. We have not touched on how many closes you could get. But if you take a look at the numbers, it is clear to see that telemarketing had generated more leads than the use of blogging and article directory submissions. There is a chance that none of your telemarketing leads close, but plenty of your leads generated online do.
The real problem here lies in what you invest – time and effort. With telemarketing, it’s as simple as outsourcing and well, you can get more than just 50 leads a month. The thing is that it costs you money. As for a “free online lead generation strategy” well, you can put as much as a 100 submissions online for a month and only ever generate a few leads and sales… but that may just be because your content is lacking a bit. Nonetheless, there are free online lead generation strategies and you’re free to try them out and see the results for yourself.
“Online Lead Generation Myth #2: Relationship businesses can’t be done on the internet.”
Some say that a sound lead generation strategy helps in not only acquiring more sales leads but in building relationships between businesses as well. Well, you’ll be glad to know that this second myth is also untrue. The only reason we can think of as to why this myth came to be is that marketers do not actually know how to engage with prospects through online means, such as the different social channels.
Engage your prospects on social networks such as Google+, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. However, when you do, don’t just go into the conversation and start spouting your self-promotional and sales-oriented mumbo jumbo. Rather than that, share content with them which you know is relevant to their needs. Talk with them and try to connect on a business level. Don’t just be pushing for a sale when you want to build a business relationship.
“Online Lead Generation Myth #3: It is not possible to generate high quality, low cost leads online.”
Once again, not true. You can do sales lead generation online and build a good list of prospects even simply through blogging. Readers that opt-in to receive your newsletter or subscribe to your posts may just be interested in what you offer. In other words, you can build an opt-in list of leads for marketing through online means.
Lead generation online is very possible and these “myths” should not discourage you from trying them out.
